What you’ll learn.
- Understand what legionella is and how Legionnaires’ disease is caught
- Recognise where legionella bacteria can grow in water systems
- Know the duties of employers and people in control of premises
- Understand the basics of risk assessment and control measures such as temperature control and flushing
The legal position.
Employers and people in control of premises must assess and control the risk from legionella under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the COSHH Regulations 2002.
The HSE’s Approved Code of Practice L8 and guidance HSG274 explain how to do this.
This is basic awareness training. It does not qualify anyone to carry out a legionella risk assessment, which should be done by a competent person.

Do learners get a certificate?
Yes. After passing the test, each learner gets a printable certificate showing the course and the date.
